New Facebook app detects pedophiles, criminals

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) undergraduate students have developed a new privacy solution for Facebook. The Social Privacy Protector (SPP) can help parents adjust their children’s profiles in one click, prevent criminals from gathering valuable personal information, and keep teens safe from pedophiles.

An American Associates, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev release reports that the SPP app has multiple levels of protection, but the most important component reviews a user’s friends list in seconds to identify which have few or no mutual links and might be “fake” profiles. The app analyzes each friend and scores the “connectedness” of every friend. It flags the lowest scores as suspicious and asks whether the friend should be restricted from personal user information, but does not defriend them.

“An important feature of our app is the ability for parents to better protect their kids’ privacy with just one click instead of having to navigate the more complicated Facebook privacy settings,” Michael Fire, a Ph.D. candidate in BGU’s Department of Information Systems Engineering explains.

“While Facebook encourages connecting with as many people as possible, we advocate limiting users, and have, for the first time, provided an algorithm to scientifically determine who to remove from friend lists,” Fire adds. “Predators rely on people friending anyone, and with teens now allowed to have Facebook accounts, we believe that our solution can provide necessary protection for all users.”The SPP also notifies the user about the applications installed on their profile that could threaten his or her privacy.

Fire, working with Professor Yuval Elovici and undergraduate students Dima Kagan and Aviad Elishar of BGU’s Telekom Innovation Laboratories and Information Systems Engineering Department, developed the Facebook application and software based on their research on Facebook and social networks in general. The app was part of a final project for Kagan’s and Elishar’s bachelor’s degrees.

“Social media is an incredible phenomenon, but has significant pitfalls if used haphazardly, especially by teens,” explains Doron Krakow, executive vice president, American Associates, Ben-Gurion of the Negev (AABGU). “We’re very proud of the fact that at BGU even undergraduate students have the opportunity to work with top researchers and can devise such an important app that could protect millions of youth.”

The free software is available as a Facebook app for all browsers, and as an add-on for Firefox. The paper has been submitted for publication.

EVERY DAY CREDIT CARD USAGE SECURITY TIPS

My wife hates when I tell her to collect the receipt from the table at every restaurant we eat at or the gas station attendant after every fuel up. This led me to today’s blog topic of sharing some practical advice concerning credit card security that may seem miniscule but can save you some big bucks in the long run. SO PLEASE HEED THE WARNINGS BELOW

WARNING 1- NEVER USE YOUR DEBIT CARD OTHER THAN AT AN ATM
Reason: Debit cards pull directly from your money and often times it is very difficult to retrieve any funds taken directly from your account. Credit cards are typically more secure and have great security and recovery practices in place to satisfy claims quickly and credit your account balances back to normal.

WARNING 2- SHAKE ALL CARD READERS INCLUDING ATM’S & GAS STATIONS
Reason: Bad guys are very good at attaching fake or false hardware over good readers that have technology secreted within them to copy /save and send your info via the web to cohorts in pirating schemes. They can also attach small cameras above the pin pad to obtain your password so keep an eye out for suspicious looking hardware.

WARNING 3- ALWAYS KEEP YOUR CREDIT CARDS IN EYESIGHT & AVAOID KEEPING A TAB
Reason: A quick slight of the hand can run your card through a fraudulent reader in a bad guy or girls pocket that may work at a bar, club or restaurant. Same goes for keeping a tab. You could be intoxicated so you may forget all your charges or lose track and someone has a lot of time to get what they need from your card. Most of the time they can hold onto your information for months before selling it to off shore bad guys for them to hit you hard on charges down the road.

WARNING 4- ALWAYS KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS NO MATTER WHAT
Reason: Preferably you track all your transactions and overview them monthly but even if you don’t this is a good idea. This lets potential bad guys know your probably watching or at least keeping an eye on your accounts. Too many people today leave receipts or tell merchants to not waste the paper because they get online statements anyway. Well not everybody monitors their statements and do you really remember exact amounts of what you ate and drank from a month ago? If you are like me then you probably do not remember what you ate yesterday.

WARNING 5- OPEN AN ACCOUNT SEPARATE FROM YOUR PRIMARY FOR ONLINE BANKING
Reason: When and if one of your accounts is compromised from shady hackers or questionable sites then it won’t be such a big deal to shut down that account for a while so your financial institutions can investigate the impropriety and rectify your claim. It will also keep your primary accounts safe from large withdrawals or bill pay interruptions.

PARKING LOT SAFETY AND AVOIDING ATTACKS

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

I have read many articles recently of people getting attacked in parking lots while getting into their parked vehicle. The attacks included kidnapping, rape, murder, robbery and multiple thefts. I believe a basic overview of awareness techniques is required for our readers and anyone who is interested in learning how to spot and avoid potential on coming attackers.

Move with a purpose when you are in public. Know where you are going and how to get there fast and efficiently. Be as discreet as possible so as to not draw unwarranted attention to yourself. Keep your eyes up and make sure that everyone around you knows that you are aware of your surroundings. Make brief eye contact (don’t stare down anyone like John Wayne). Say hello but don’t engage in conversation if someone is in your personal space bubble.  Walk with your head up, shoulders back, and make yourself appear as confident as possible.  Hopefully you learn some self-defense measures, be it weapon or weapon-less defense techniques.  If you have not learned self-defense then at least appear as if you had.

Keep your phone in your pocket or purse when in public and keep your hands as empty as possible. Make sure to keep any purse or bag as small and as close to your body as possible. If you have to carry shopping bags keep them in your weak hand so you can still fight with your strong hand if needed. Always wear shoes you can fight or run in. Keep an emergency whistle or small air horn in your bag with a self-defense weapon (IT DRAWS BETTER ATTENTION). Don’t assume others will help because they usually won’t. FIGHT FIRST as it is YOUR life.

Look for things that do not add up such as loiterers, drunkards, gangs or groups who do not seem to have a legitimate purpose to be in that area at that time. Avoid those people if possible, however, if you cannot avoid them then ask a store worker or security official to walk you to your vehicle. If you have a self-defense weapon then keep it legally concealed until you have to use it. Issue a prompt loud warning just before you deploy that weapon.

When you get to your vehicle, do not waste time or get distracted. Look at your surroundings in your immediate span of control for any imminent threats. Pan handlers or adjacently parked vehicles with people inside them. Always question their motive and just give yourself the best angle of attack or escape in case things get sticky with those too close to your proximity. In law enforcement we call this “Position of Advantage”.

Place your bags in your trunk, get in your car and go as expeditiously as possible. I mean you don’t have to “DUKES OF HAZARD IT” but just move fast, particularly when you feel uneasy about something. That is your built in SPIDEY sense telling you something is wrong. Too many times I have heard women say that they knew something felt wrong but they continued to engage their phone or put on their make-up before they got attacked.
